To maximize Nocturne's effects and keep the room dark when I'm away from my
computer, I choose an all-white screen saver that Nocturne inverts to black
once activated.
As a result of this, unless I manually change the screen saver back to a
colorful/interesting one when I'm not using Nocturne, I am stuck with an
all-white screen saver, which is not optimal. (I am sure that my backlight life
will suffer as a result...)
Can there be a way for Nocturne to select a specific screen saver when it is
activated? This way I could select a screen saver for regular use, and another
that, when Nocturne inverts my screen, appears completely black.
(Sorry if this is placed in the wrong location, but I'm not sure where
something like this belongs...)
Thanks for the great product!

Nocturne's "Hide the Desktop" feature also hides the desktop icons, making it
less than useful; but if you use darker desktop images, they get way too bright
in "Night Mode".
So, would it be possible to grab the current desktop image and temporarily
replace it with an inverted version, when switching to Night Mode? The effect
would be to invert everything *but* the desktop, which would be more useful!

What steps will reproduce the problem?
I haven’t been able to find a way to reproduce this yet.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Invert menubar should truly invert all colors inside the menubar, but it does
not do this all the time. Sometimes it only inverts the status menu icons and
the menubar itself - but not all colors. See the screenshots provided below.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
I’m using the official 2.0.0 build (nothing nightly ;)) on OSX 10.6.6 on a
MacBookPro5,4.
Please provide any additional information below.
See the screenshots. The correct behaviour should be the yellow selection. Also
there is a screenshot of the inverted Little Snitch Statusbaricon, which you
can see on the ‚buggy‘ screenshots, doesn’t get inverted either.
Slight note: I’d rather rate this as a new feature. I actually really like
having only the bar itself inverted and not all colors on it. Black-Blue is a
nice mix. So, if it is possible to get this „bug“ into a function, it would
be pretty awesome. Pitty that my ObjC skills aren’t that good (yet) :D

like most menubar apps have. Then, doubleclicking Nocturn.app while it is

Only the active space and the primary display will hold settings set in the

settings were set in and everything goes back to the way it should.
Preferences settings do not change when switching spaces, ie all settings
are global but the spaces don't reflect that. Only 1 space gets the
settings from the preferences all others get the default.
From my limited knowledge of mac programming, it seems like the settings
are only applied to the primary screen when the program tweaks the display
parameters. It is leaving out secondary and whatever spaces uses to
define the separate spaces.

Nocturne could really do with a global keybinding. There would simply be just
one user-assignable keybinding - to toggle
day / night mode.
Reasons:
1. Overall, some users are desktop users and therefore don't have a light
sensor in their computer.
2. Laptop users may want a convenient manual control in addition to the
auto-sensor.
How to implement:
Global keybindings can't be done in Cocoa. You must use a call which is part of
the old Carbon API. There are enough
examples on the web, including a sample project from Apple.
Look for "RegisterEventHotKey" in Carbon API reference

You can revert to normal behavior by checking then deselecting the checkbox for
dim when inactive. Someone mentioned here->
http://macthemes.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16803339&p=1 that it will do this
also when using Spaces also

set time to turn on and off nocturne automatically (mac mini doesn't have
sensors, but I'd love it if it
the screen went inverted from 7pm to 7am).
apologies for misplaced issue (yr forum is down)

The only issue with Nocturne is that some applications (such as Firefox)
alternate light background content with dark background content.
The dark content becomes a bright flash and can be very disturbing late at
night. For example, if you close a full screen Terminal it will produce a
bright flash.
One way to get around this would be to detect and mask large regions that
would be rendered as light colored. This would ensure that *all* windows
and displays were dark at all times. I'm not a GUI programmer, but I assume
that you have access to each frame before it's displayed on screen as well
as each window. Pseudocode would then be something like this:
for each rendered frame
for each window in that frame
determine if the window is majority light or dark (simple heuristic
would work)
if it is majority light, then render as dark using standard nocturne
if it is majority dark, then it would be *rendered* as light using
standard nocturne. Instead, *refrain* from inverting the colors in this
region so that the normal dark display applies.
This is a per-frame computation but would be pretty fast -- basically just
summing up the fluorescence in each window before it's rendered.
An more sophisticated algorithm would actually look at UI elements *within*
each window -- for example, some web sites may have dark borders that
become disturbingly light under Nocturne. What you could do then is segment
the region into clusters of local fluorescence intensity and invert or
leave uninverted as necessary. This segmentation would be tricky to get
fast and right, but it would ensure that Nocturne *never* rendered a large
bright flash.

ENHANCEMENT - Draggable overlay window exempt from the invert
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
A window with outline and resize handles ( like skype screen share ) that
allows normal colors inside the window. ( better for watching a video while in
invert )
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
2.0

The menu bar becomes inverted every time I exit flash full-screen mode in
Safari when night mode is disabled.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Start Nocturne, ensuring that night mode is disabled
2. Go to Youtube, watch random video in full-screen mode
3. Exit full-screen mode
Voila! Menu bar is inverted and dimmed when inactive. Settings are as follows:
(X means checked, 0 means not)
X Invert screen
X Hide desktop
X Disable shadows
0 Adjust screen brightness
X Monochrome
0 Tint Colors
X Invert hue
0 Invert menu bar
0 Dim when inactive
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nocturne 2.0.0 on OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H574
MacBook Pro
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. In Nocturne preferences, uncheck all options except Tint Colors. Make white
be 50% gray.
2. Launch iTunes, start playing a track, and press Command-T to turn on the
visualizer.
3. Press Command-F to make the visualizer full-screen.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect to see the visualizer full-screen, 50% dimmed. Instead, the moment
iTunes starts fading
the screen to black before jumping into fullscreen, the dimming stops. The
visualizer is at full
brightness, and the screen remains at full brightness even after exiting the
visualizer.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nocturne 1.0.4, iTunes 7.4, Mac OS X 10.4.10.
Please provide any additional information below.
The only way to dim the screen again is to switch Nocturne to day mode (which
doesn't change
the display at all) and then back to night.

To reproduce this problem:
1. Invert screen with Nocturne
2. Switch back to day
The screen still has the monochrom green->black scheme that I set up, though
the desktop is visible and the colors are no longer inverted. Quitting the app
solves the problem.
Specs:
iMac 11,1 running Mac OS 10.6.7
Radeon HD 4850

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start nocture (in Day mode)
2. Switch to full-screen in some app (e.g. Keynote)
3. Switch back out of full-screen, and menubar is now dark and auto-hidden
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Menubar should maintain state, not become dark.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nocture 2.0, OS X 10.6.7
Please provide any additional information below.
Menubar can be restored either by switching back to the login-screen and
returning to the session, or by switching to night and back to day in nocturne.
