Agreed, I'm just not sure how to go about shortening the messages. I wonder if there's any precendent for this kind of thing in other libraries.
I know that warnings have an optional stacklevel
that controls this behavior in the warning stack trace (https://docs.python.org/3/library/warnings.html). So I wonder if anyone has built something similar for exceptions. Or alternatively, I wonder if there's a way to use warnings internally and convert them to exceptions up the call chain.

Could we catch the exception at the add_scatterternary
level (or with a decorator?) and then rethrow a different exception with the same message, which would then have a 1-frame-deep stack trace?
