I found that there is a workaround. When auto.action is executed, it sources all hooks and the interface hok. In these files, the value of $action can be tested and acted upon. Perhaps this is already sufficient? I will probably change $action to $ACTION in the next release.

I already saw that I could use variables defined elsewhere in netctl (since they are sourced) but I had no guarantee that they would always be named that way or even exist.

If you codified such available variables like $interface and $profile to hooks I'd happily use them :-)

This is good. I notice related to this, though, that when using netctl-ifplugd, $profile is instead called $Profile, there are no equivalents to $interface or $action. Making those variables standardized over both would be useful.
