Yeah, this idea has been discussed before, but I forgot to add an issue for it. CSSInject should definitely support ExternalResources, plus the other resource types as well (ClassResource and ThemeResource).
Should be straightforward to implement.

The new 1.0 version now has this feature implemented. Available for download in the Vaadin Directory.
