Sounds like extra hassle to me. Uploading by hand is still available for those who want to be unconventional.

Yes, reading it now with fresh head it sounds best to follow to standard structure.

Some repos only have built files on the gh-pages branch. I think there should be support for non-master branches.

Actually we are using the github tags functionality so master or no master it doest matter. We download the tagged release
