Filtering and sorting are definitely popular requests. The philosophy is not intended to be dogmatic, rather it's a sense that solving the hitherto observed quirks, if possible, will be much more valuable because it will provide "best practices" for extending the plugin beyond whatever might be built-in.

The new g:dirvish_mode feature should solve this nicely (let me know if not). Try this:

:let g:dirvish_mode = ':sort'

g:dirvish_mode takes a couple options or an arbitrary ex command. See :help g:dirvish_mode.
