inside the forEach, r.name === this.start will always be true; but yes, if not passed, it will be undefined

I think what I mean is that currently start within the forEach() can be undefined -- and it doesn't look like that was the intention from line 134:

I think this would be a solution?

start = start || this.rules[0]
this.start = start

Within the .forEach() start would refer to the outer start -- not this.rules

this within the .forEach() is this.rules on the outside -- there is no start off of this.rules on the outside
