Having done some more testing, the code above is not sufficient to fix the problem.
Any further commands sent to MySQL result in ERR_BAD_HANDSHAKE, and I cannot find the reason for this.
Maybe MySQLClient should just throw an exception when it encounters the old style authentication reply, since its not good to be using old length passwords anyway.

Pre-4.1 is almost dead. You can also use IP-based restrictions.
