Yes, it is a serious backward incompatible change potentially affecting all applications out there. I don't believe it's worth it, one could (or should be able to) change it with one line in configuraiton.

I think it is ok if you want to create release 2.0.0 :-) Until that there could be only a notice about future change to different default naming convention.

Releasing 2.0.0 just to change default naming strategy is abuse of versioning. :)
