After upgrading to 0.7.6 all appears to be OK!!!
Just a quick comment on 0.76... You may want to slow down or not poll for logins when the user is on a tab that is/was already logged in and/or does not have a log in form. It does get concerting/distracting to see the toolbar have a grayed out Logged In suddenly darked then gray out again every few seconds.

Thanks for the update!

I never noticed the logged in text changing until you mentioned it - I only see it for a split second and irregularly at that - this may just be down to a difference in hardware but the other thing to check is if your security software is slowing things down? I've heard that Microsoft security essentials has exceptionally poor performance when monitoring local communication between applications and I suppose it's possible that other security applications also have similar bugs.

Can you see what it says when it is not greyed out? Is it definitely still "Logged in" or some other text?

Do you think the toolbar flashing is a serious enough reason to halt the release of version 0.8?

I think I know why it would behave in this way but the fix is probably not trivial (maybe I'd need to delay 0.8 for a few more months while I find enough time to fix it). It is something I want to address (or rather the underlying behaviour is something I want to address) but there are quite a few potential side-effects if modifying it now.
