So this is the current reality. There are two cases you have to think about with respect to large messages and zmqs internal buffers.

Stream sockets - it turns out indeed that messages sent and received over stream sockets will be split up into messages of the buffer size or less. however it seems the api gaurantees that ever time you get a chunk of the original stream it will come with 1 identity frame and 1 message frame. This is good news, as its really easy to confirm and also very easy to code to.

Non-stream sockets - it may be the case that under the hood zmq breaks these messages up if they are larger than the internal buffer, but by the when you get the message from the sockets recv method it will have been pieced back together. So nothing to worry about there
