Unfortunately, the general problem of finding all possible indirect accesses is very hard. You can easily tweak your .bashrc
and run this script without modifications in such a way that small
is never referenced.
Rather than chasing more and more rigorous proofs for reference through indirection (or lack thereof), I think that just not counting indirection gets you 90% there without requiring any breakthroughs in static analysis technology.
