Do you want me to import the "subjects" data into the database, or did you want to just fetch the raw JSON and process it on the client side?

Well,.. for now the easiest is to just pull the JSON directly and offer
feature parity. Later, if we wanted to index the subjects and/or offer
search capability, we can import it into the DB.
What do you think?

Does that mean that to get one subject, the browser would need to still fetch the entire file? It's fine as long as the file is cached.

Yes, that's what it means. The current implementation in Lisp is the same
thing, except that the JSON --> HTML conversion is done at the backend.
