rtlsdr_read_async returned with -5 means that there was an error communicating with the USB device. I'm afraid that there's a good chance you have bad hardware (which could include a USB hub along the way to the rtl-sdr hardware — try plugging it directly into your computer), or a software problem in librtlsdr, libusb, or possibly gr-osmosdr.

It's unlikely anything that ShinySDR does or doesn't do could cause or avoid this problem. I recommend that you start by trying other programs that will also use the hardware (such as rtl_fm, rtl_power, and Gqrx) and see if you get the same problem. If it only happens with ShinySDR, then I'm wrong. If it also happens with rtl_fm and so on, then you'll need to do some more troubleshooting — or contact someone who knows more about the actual guts of rtl-sdr drivers than I do.

Sorry I couldn't help more. I hope you find a solution — and if it turns out that there is something ShinySDR can do to avoid this problem, feel free to reopen this issue, because I want things to be as plug-and-play as I can make them.

Kevin, thanks so much for help. Keep in mind that other programs like gnuradio-companion, rtl_fm, hd_sharp (in windows) does communicate well with hardware. i am using a product of nooelec if that helps. I will look deeper to solve the problem because i really do want to have the shinySDR. it seems a beautiful program! Thank you!

Dear Kevin, you know more about sdr devices, so i am posting again, to say the issue is not with the shinySD. Its with my libraries. I had the same problem with gqrx but the paradox is that rtl_fm worked just fine. i reinstall gr-osmosdr and librtl etc, but it didn't worked. Finally i donwloaded a binary version of x86_64 of gqrx that has build-in libraries and worked just fine. So, how can we use these libraries that gqrx used, with shinySDR? Actually, without replacing my libraries, how can i change the path of libraries that shinySDR use?
(i am using ubuntu 12.04, 64bit)

THANKS alot for your comntribution to opensource projects, and to sdr commnity, and for help of course.

One last thing to suggest: Are you installing up-to-date versions of gr-osmosdr and so on? Ubuntu can be pretty behind, so I use the Gqrx PPA — it provides gnuradio, gr-osmosdr, and so on (Gqrx has basically the same dependencies as ShinySDR). If you're not already using it, I suggest giving it a try. Make sure you uninstall ALL of the current packages for gnuradio* and gr-osmosdr, because mixing versions can cause trouble of its own.
