I have seen that warning message intermittently, but then it rebooted anyway. If that wasn't the case here, it might be because of an incompatibility between the systemctl bundled with kured (16.04) and your distro (18.04.1). I'm working on a change that will use the systemctl from the host mount namespace which should address this!

@davidkarlsen could you try again with https://github.com/weaveworks/kured/releases/tag/1.1.0 and see if you have better luck?
