usually the json gem does the type casting. do you maybe have any other gems required that patch the json gem?

Crap, you are right. Unfortunately it's a gem I wrote that uses yajl-ruby's special include mode that acts as a drop-in replacement for the json gem. Switching it to a plain json gem resolved the issue.
