There is another tool called autolayout for i3 witch approach i think can be implemented in Coretile, this will make your product best in class.
Cortile will not work like the mentioned i3-extension, as cortile is not aware of any i3 layout logic.
It is not recommended to use i3wm and cortile together, as both have more or less the same design goals and will interfere with each other.
You can force all windows to be in floating state by default, like it's mentioned here...

...but this is definitely not the intended use case of i3wm. Just use as non tiling window manager and install cortile on top of it.
