Shit. @lewis6991 the text should be

  top = (top > 0) and top - 1 or 0
  local sourced_text = api.nvim_buf_get_lines(0, top, bottom, false)
  local replaced_text = {}
  for index, line in ipairs(sourced_text) do
    local l, _ = string.gsub(line, '%s+$', '')
    table.insert(replaced_text, index, l)
  end
  api.nvim_buf_set_lines(0, top, bottom, false, replaced_text)

I've fixed the code to use nvim_buf_set_text instead. Looks like I forgot to push.
