Returning error codes is not really due to applying for AOP. It is a desired pattern and was planned for the next stable release cycle. Perhaps you noticed, we've already trying to separate out certain helper functions into their own "common" module. So at some degree we're already applying AOP.
It would probably help if you had one or two concrete examples on what you're proposing.
