In Windows PowerShell the following works for me:
$Env:OPENAI_API_KEY = 'sk-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX'; python examples/ai_society/role_playing.py

In cmd prompt, you should do SET OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-xxxxx
