Hi,
MDM means MDM Display Manager, not "Mint" Display Manager.
The project doesn't need to be renamed upstream. I suggest to simply package mdm in Debian as "mdm-display-manager". You can use the debian directory present in the git repo as inspiration, replacing occurences of mdm with mdm-display-manager or write your own packaging from scratch.
Like all Mint projects we include our own packaging within the repo for convenience. Feel free to remove it and to add your own debian directory instead.
