That should work with pigz 2.4, since that version tries to emulate the command line processing of gzip. I haven't tried it though.

I can't speak for how things do or do not get into Linux distributions.

Hi @CottonEaster, I am using pigz like you mentioned (symlinked it to /bin/gzip) without any problem for about a year now. I haven't observerved any incompatibilities (ie. something running single-threaded only) so far.

Ah, thank you for the information. In that case I am tempted to do as you have done. Still, I am wary of something going wrong when e.g. I upgrade my OS (and at best after such an upgrade I might have to redo the symlink). I will think on it.

I do think that by default distributions should ship a multithreaded compressor.
