seems to the multiline editor have a "float:left" property, can you check it?
In a normal installation the editor not have any float.
Maybe the theme to you are using are altering the wp admin or something like that,

It seems the editor is wrapped in a span and as a result it is an inline object. Giving it display:block and clear:both solves the problem. It doesn't seem to have float:left property according to firebug
classes mentioned are: mceEditor & wp_themeSkin those are the skin and the visual editor I presume
