It looks like you aren't inspecting the overlay argument and are returning an MKPolylineRenderer in all cases, including when the MapBox layer is requesting a tile renderer. Normally, this renderer is handled for you so you don't have to implement the delegate method, but if you do, you can't just blindly return a renderer.

Right. But what should I return from the method when the overlay argument is of class MBXMapViewTileOverlay?

You can return either [[MKTileOverlayRenderer alloc] initWithTileOverlay:] or else just nil and it will be handled for you. I'll look into making this a bit clearer in the documentation.
