+1 for removing WeeChat script. In addition to being misspelled on the website (the C should be a capital letter) and it being a script, not a plugin
Perhaps we shouldn't throw away software because of a spelling error: weechat/weechat@1ef7a55.
I think that OP is talking about the Lua script, considering that the Python script supports E2EE.
The author @poljar asked in 2019 for the script to not be recommended
I think I want to make the distinction here, I don't want to recommend this for general use for non-technical users. It's fine to use the script if you're of a experimental nature.
The difference between a plugin and a script is important. Plugins implement things such as the IRC protocol support and scripting APIs and I understand them to be a lot more performant than the scripts.
I don't think there's such a general rule around, there are limitations the scripting API imposes, but then again there are more protocols implemented using the scripting API than there are using the plugin API.
Unrelated to this, there's of course the Matrix plugin for WeeChat as well if you don't like scripts.

- WeeChat by themselves say that they don't support Matrix.org weechat/weechat#1386 (comment)
- WeeChat's integrated "package manager"
/script
doesn't find the script as it's missing from the WeeChat scripts repo - The author @poljar asked in 2019 for the script to not be recommended weechat/weechat#1386 (comment) and confirmed this to be the case of 24 Jul 2021 weechat/weechat#1386 (comment).
