From the framework there is only one limitation: server and client must use the same/compatible IMarshallerFactory implementation.
IMarshallerFactory is simple you can choose any other non built-in serializer.

ProtoBuf and MessagePack understand [DataContract] and [DataMember].
here is the Name for DataContract and Order is for ProtoBuf and MessagePack:

[DataContract]
public class Demo
{
    [DataMember(Name = "Name", Order = 1)]
    public string Name { get; set; }

    [DataMember(Name = "Size", Order = 2)]
    public int Size { get; set; }
}

For the limitations and features of serializers itself please check related repositories, for example the ProtoBuf does not accepts nulls:

.Serialize(new [] { "foo", null, "bar"} );
