It might be reasonable to just make the source implementation as small as possible to favor compatibility. Also, it’s probably not a great idea for performance reasons to encourage reading files in tiny chunks (individual floats, e.g.); even with buffering, it’s better to read in larger chunks and then synchronously process those chunks.
