I got this mostly working! Unfortunately, automatic updates aren't going to be reasonable on macOS until I get a developer account and do code signing. Windows may be good.
To wrap things up, we need to add a Windows and Linux build (which means I need to add support for these) and write up a release process describing how we do releases of new versions.

Oh, and I'm leaving the code for auto-updates in for now. Logs will only be generated if DEBUG environment variable is set. This puts us in a place where... Windows auto-updates might work and MacOS updates will work if I ever get a Developer certificate from Apple ($99/yr).
Auto-updates are disabled if on Linux. We'll probably end up shipping Snap or worst-case, a tarball dist.
