I think the way to do this is to follow the footsteps of anvi-get-pn-ps-ratio or anvi-gen-fixation-index-matrix and implement something that works with a variability-profile-txt artifact directly.

If we can come up with a good design, all programs that work with variability-profile-txt would accept flags that produce such summaries at the function- or metabolism-level :)
