Regardless of your system cryptographic keys have to be in ram somewhere in order to perform cryptographic operations with them.

The slot is the slot you're reading/writing to and the configuration of the device determines the key slot the device will use to perform encrypt/decrypt and MAC operations with (each slot config has read and write key slots and mode specifiers).

Since the host/mcu also has to be able to also perform the other side of the symmetric operation the encrypted read and write commands accept the key as an input.
