I use i3 and you have to bind a key to the terminal. For me its "cmd-N" on the Mac keyboard. You also have to make sure (if you watch my youtube video) you disable Fusion from capturing "cmd-N" to mean "New VM". It sounds like you're right on the finish line! But its something like that :)
