If you are using Python 2.5 (which does not include the json module) and were using Django 1.4's included simplejson, deleting those lines would definitely cause an error (since no json implementation would be imported). Since removing/not removing those lines will not affect other users (other than DeprecationWarnings if they are using Django), I do not think it is a good idea to make this change at the current time.

Future versions of this library are not going to support Python 2.5, so I am keeping this issue open so we remember to fix this then.
