This is almost certainly the way that we will be proceeding once we begin work on exporting to multiple output devices in the v0.6 release. I'd recommend holding off on additional investigation until after the python rewrite is complete, to avoid the risk of having any changes wiped out.

That said, investigation on a python solution to decoupling would be most welcome, if you wanted to look into it. The architecture will remain pretty much the same, with some home-grown functionality replaced by python libraries where possible (for example, we will not be rolling our own logging solution, so that entire module is going to be obsoleted after the rewrite).
