When I investigated, I found the code that is supposed to work this work is missing. I wrote the code, then realised it's impossible to work because the various modules need to be able to access things that you cannot access during the install/upgrade process.

I've now built a script called postinstall.php (in the master branch on github). You can manually run this script after installation - it will rebuild the entire search index. I've added instructions to the README.
