yasm is a new build dependency in libass 0.11.x, and apparently this causes problems.
Can you post your yasm version? You can check with yasm --version
from mpv-build.
$ yasm --version
yasm 1.1.0.2352
from mpv-build.
You probably need yasm 1.2.0. We should update libass and add a version check for yasm.

Yes - yasm in 12.04 is too old, referenced this in issue #28
from mpv-build.
Opened a bug report: libass/libass#51
from mpv-build.
For now, I changed the update script to force 0.10.2, which works around this issue.
I'll fix it once libass releases a fixed version.
from mpv-build.
So 0.10.2 doesn't use yasm at all? If that's the case, we could also --disable-yasm and put it back on the latest version.
from mpv-build.
That's true. Well, I hoped the problem would be fixed quickly, but apparently the libass side needs some more testing. Well, we'll see.

This was temporarily fixed in 423f63f by reverting to the last working libass release.
We stopped waiting for libass to released the fix in ab7b8ec, so there's no reason to keep this bug open anymore.
