This only happens when self is returned from a method. These methods include:

  • .save()
  • .read()
  • .get_data()

I guess you could chain these methods. The last one would print the repr(). Unless you finished with a .df(), which would print the dataframe instead.

In the end, I don't think this behavior is terrible. Basically, it returns the NWIS object when you use .save() and .read(). When that happens, it triggers the repr() function to display the object. That's fine- if you save or read a file, it seems okay to show what file we are talking about. This behavior also allows you to chain the .df() method, like this: herring.save('junk.gz').df('q)
