This has been implemented to the extent that I think is even theoretically possible. Implementing it had the nice side effect of cleaning up symlink support in general.

One idea for checking equivalency would be creating a Windows symbolic link with a POSIX symbolic link path and checking the result, but this equivalency check has to happen during the reconciliation phase, and that happens on the controller, which may not be running Windows.

We also need to remember that unless we have some sort of symbolic link normalization scheme, our rsync-based transfer of serialized snapshots is going to take a performance hit. This was easy enough to work around in the executability case, because it was much easier to strip and re-apply executability bits, but symbolic link semantics are much more complex.
