Sorry, that's not sufficient reason for adding this niche (filetype-specific) functionality in core. If you don't like that plugin, there are other autopair plugins out there.

@clason It is not niche; xml tags are widely used and usually into any languages using macros and other attributes. the t
motion is generally available in the in native vim no matter of the file type while working with xml tags only. The implementation is trivial (much more trivial than comments and autocompletion) and will make neovim much more useful out of the box

Yes, but neither is configurable or happens automatically. While "autoclose" even for parens is highly controversial. And tree-sitter integration is a must for any core feature.

To add to that, with the recent snippet/lsp.completion addition using a language server like lemminx gets you the option to complete known properties, close custom tags via a snippet, and rename works on tags. No plugin needed - all the functionality is already in core:

Hey! While the auto-closing behavior might be out of the question, I believe renaming could be improved. Yes, the usual LSP renaming is nice, but the LSP spec also has a capability that can be used for tag renaming (which isn't tracked elsewhere): textDocument/linkedEditingRange.

Yes, implementing the full LSP spec (including this) is in scope and an explicit goal. PR welcome!
