This has been added, and I've updated the pkgsrc package. It is enabled by default on a list of architectures (which other developers may want to add to), but if yours is not listed then you can also use the new pkgin-prefer-gzip
option to enable it.

I'd go so far as to say this would benefit from an selectable default as well - either build time based on CPU arch, or runtime based on available memory
