Any reason for using W3 Total Cache over the built in fastcgi cache in nginx?

It is make no sense. :) However it isn't bad rules for WordPress Nginx.

Some of the rules, indeed, may be taken.
Not sure if taking the whole file "as is" is a good idea, since it may change and depend on WP version.
But maybe providing preconfigured boilerplate-ish version of the default wp config as "src/sites/wp.conf" is a way to go.

I was thinking, maybe, of the src/nginx-bp/vendor/ directory for the configs coming from popular web apps minus the settings which are already present in nginx-boilerplate. Which could in turn be included with a single line from the copy of a default vhost config.

Just tested the default WP install with the default boilerplate config and it seemed to work out of the box.

I'll close this, since the code can not be taken "as is" and most of the features here were already implemented.
