I don't think this is a bug. For the operating systems that have open dialogs like ubuntu, you can right click the background and set 'show hidden files', as this is a platform specific menu supplied by Qt. Although under ubuntu-xfce it doesn't read that I have hidden files set. However, for example, if I run the same dialog on windows, it shows hidden files by default (because that's how I have it set) and the right click menu is the standard explorer view menu.
In other words, you can't necessarily change the OS setting to show hidden files from the QFileDialog, so the option is not there. However, at runtime, it knows which OS it's using, and adjusts the dialog.
Because of the different outcomes, there is no way to set the desired functionality in code without making a custom dialog.
edit: QFileDialog is way more robust now. I found an easy way to make a custom select dialog with the proper filters. Wasn't looking hard enough =p
