then a npm install without explicit version will still use 0.2.10.

args, sorry, i was wrong. I think what would work is using a tag (@next is common) https://docs.npmjs.com/cli/dist-tag - but i never used that.
I fear I have confused that with the version range in package.json dependencies, I think if you specify e.g. ^1.0.0 as dependency it won't use 1.1.0-beta but it would use 1.1.0.

I've just unpublished that version. I'll let you know if/when I find a solution.
