Yes, you have to create a custom capture. There's a section in the README that covers this in more detail.

In your particular case, creating a queries/json/textobjects.scm in your config folder with the following contents will do the trick:

;extends

(object
  (pair
    key: (_) @key
    value: (_) @value))

Now that we've created the custom captures, you can use @key and @value in your config:

["id"] = "@key",
["io"] = "@value",

@kuator as far as I can see in the README, there aren't any @key.inner / @value.inner built in textobjects. I think you mean @assignment.lhs and @assignment.rhs

There isn't, but if you try to open a json file, hover over a key and :InspectTree it, the capture is called key, same goes for value. Do I have to add a custom .schm file or something, I am not knowledgeable about treesitter
