Good News Everyone: YouTube's been radicalizing all of us. We have a scary YouTube problem, but talk about that in the context of the deeper, darker problem.

We're losing the war of ideas because our infrastructure is nothing compared to that of the right - this was the come-to-Jesus takeaway from the SxSW panel What Does it Take to Change People’s Minds. It's believed the right has invested perhaps $1B into research & development into an infrastructure and it's now a full-fledged military.

Companies and organizations use online product marketing to try to send the right message to us at the right time to get us to do something.

To continue the military analogy and back to YouTube Combined with reconnaissance (does Youtube have any vulnerabilities we may be able to exploit?) and

, then builds weapons around that, and now they have a massive weapon capable of making precise, well-choreographed attacks on threats such as organizations on the left.

Threats don't have to come from the left,

We can talk about whether or not it was known internally that the algorithm designed to optimize attention may also have a side-effect of pushing extreme content and push their ethics officer or board for answers or action. What's interesting to me about YouTube is how an algorithm that's perhaps unethical was exploited.
