If you're getting GPU hangs, then there is a driver problem. We may be doing something wrong to tickle the bug though.

The version of nvidia-cg-toolkit is 3.0.0007, the one supplied with Linux Mint 12/Ubuntu 11.10

Well, you can try a newer version at least:
http://http.developer.nvidia.com/Cg/cg_3_1_0010.html
I had problems with nvidia-cg-toolkit-2.1.0012. OpenRA even doesn't start with it. But it was no that problem with nvidia-cg-toolkit-2.1.0017. So, you can try other versions of it too...

I tried the latest version of nvidia-cg-toolkit, but it didn't work out. As this is probably a Mesa bug, I'm closing this bug.
