After some isolated performance testing, interestingly using throws
/try?
is more performant than using an Optional.
In a direct comparison, these were the stats:
public func optional() -> String? {
return "string"
}
public func tryfunc() throws -> String {
return "string"
}
final class OptionalVsTryTests: XCTestCase {
func testOptionalPerformance() throws {
measure {
for _ in 0...100_000_000 {
let result = optional()
_ = result
}
}
}
func testTryPerformance() throws {
measure {
for _ in 0...100_000_000 {
let result = try? tryfunc()
_ = result
}
}
}
}
Debug Build, 1 million iterations each:
- Optional: 753ms
try?
: 733ms
Release Build, 100 million iterations each:
- Optional: 314ms
try?
: 263ms

just for interest, maybe worth trying this on custom types, numbers and things just to see
