So I think this is logically correct, after drawing some diagrams and making little brackets with my fingers and squinting. However, readability and correctness-under-maintenance are both requirements for this codebase, and this routine fails that test -- no critical routine should require finger-brackets and diagrams to understand.
We will rewrite this.
