I will agree with you. I only got it to work by providing a dictionary to the initializer (like in your second example).

Traditional Flask configuration settings do not seem to work.

Using your first example should work because of:

base_config = app.config.copy()
if self.config:
    base_config.update(self.config)
if config:
    base_config.update(config)

config = base_config

but you are right, the docs should clarify how to configure Flask-Caching.
