Am I right in assuming the Tor browser comes as an archive (tar.gz) that contains a standalone version of the browser, where the user decides where to place it on the system in userspace (hence it won't be anywhere in the $PATH) ?
Not knowing where on the system the browser binary actually resides would make adding support for it to ICE nearly impossible.

If you download Tor Browser from their website it is a tarball, but when you install it using the ubuntu repos or AUR it will install it in a specific location.
However if you add a command option in the settings, you can manually set the Tor Browser executable and therefore install Tor Browser anywhere on ones system.
