I would like some clarification on this also. As I understood it Unregistering from push notifications would only be useful for development or if a user no longer wants push (although in this case they would likely remove the app all together)

It is not strictly necessary to call unregister, although if you do so, you will of course need to re-register to resume notification delivery. I have since revised my advise to only call unregister if your current token stops working. At that point you would get a new token and would need to update the database on your interim push server.

There are some corner cases where unregister would need to be called more often. For example a pass around device in a corporate environment might want to associate a push token with specific login credentials, for targeted pushes on a shared device.
